My little muse and I were walking out on the train tracks behind the studio a couple weeks ago. Mother Nature has been very gentle this season (despite the 20″ + inches of snow she dumped on Halloween, of course) and I have been able to go out almost every weekend this fall for outdoor shoots. I am terribly behind in updating the site with new photos between shooting and processing, but they are coming! In the meantime, I thought I would post one of my little Bean.
There have been a slot of big changes in my life this past year – a new look and feel of my photography site – including a name change – is one of them! Ladies and gentlemen, introducing ‘Sophie Bean Photography: Modern Portraiture’ – the softer (family friendly) side of moi!
When I first started taking taking photos back in 2007, I created the name ‘Personacide’. To me, it meant breaking down the conventional view of one’s public persona and really searching for the hidden layers underneath to reveal a person’s true self. As an artist, I still firmly believe this – that we all have a public image we project, but our inner selves can be more guarded or seldom seen.
As I move forward, and look to build a business taking modern portraits, I decided it was time to reveal a softer side of myself. Being a mother, I adore taking photos of my daughter (and I am pretty sure the one on the way will think the camera is an extension of me as well). I love capturing her in her natural state – playing, walking, running, being silly, being serious… every aspect of her that makes her, well, her. As a result, I love capturing those same details in other people’s children as well as family dynamics. That being said, this site will be redirected and renamed in the coming weeks.
Oh, the artsy-fartsy (that is the clinical term) side of me will still be creating quirky portraits with clones, anti-gravity people, bunny masks, textures and roaming the the urban streets, backwoods and grave yards – but that’s a whole ‘nother story.

I LOVE this shot! The skewed hat… the big blues eyes. I should mentioned that this was right before she tried to bite the camera lens. For anyone who has kids – and who has heard of The Laurie Berkner Band – I now have that song in my head. My daughter and I use to dance to her CDs – great music for kids with catchy tunes that adults can listen to.
OH! And don’t forget… Snow is fun and all, but the season for outdoor shoots is fast coming to a close… just a few weekends left (with Mother Nature’s cooperation, of course), contact me if you want to squeeeeeze one in for your kids (or yourself!)! I am looking into some awesome new backdrops for in studio shoots.

I’m still playing catch up on adding photos to my site. A few months ado the always daring and always gorgeous Meredith and I did a in-studio boudoir shoot. I’ve done boudoir style shoots for a couple of women, but Meredith was kind enough to let me use hers for portfolio reasons. My view on these boudoir shoots is that sexy can be subtle, without crossing any boundries the client has set. For these, we used dark, dramatic lighting and a vibrant red to really make these stand out. Since we were in studio, we lacked the actual “boudoir”, but I think we successfully made due the objects around the studio… and it doesn’t hurt to have such a fantastic model.
